“Of what use to a man are a million dollars unless he does something worthwhile with them?” -- Bernard Baruch

The Baruch Society recognizes those individuals and businesses who support our mission with annual contributions of $100 or more.

The society is named in honor of Bernard Baruch, whose generosity helped build the first Camden Hospital in 1913 and helped rebuild it after a 1921 fire. Over his lifetime, the Camden-born financier and presidential advisor donated the equivalent of $19 million.

The society also represents generations of other dedicated Kershaw County citizens, including:

  • Guests of The Court Inn who, in the winter of 1912, raised $100 for the yet-to-be-opened new hospital;
  • A group of Camden women who served fundraising dinners at the Old ARmory that same year, raising hospital funds at 25-cents a plate;
  • Captain John Burdell, whose 1912 will posthumously paid a large portion of the hospital's annual expenses; and
  • Marian DuPont Scott, who in 1983 bequeathed her Springdale Race Course to the state with the stipulation that part of the annual Carolina and Colonial Cup proceeds be given to help KershawHealth carry out its mission.

We invite you to join The Baruch Society, and enter the ranks of the generous forebearers whose support laid the foundations and nurtured the growth of healthcare services here over the past century. With your an annual contribution to The Hospital Foundation, you are investing in the future health of Kershaw County.
