Hospice

Hospice is a unique kind of care that gives patients and their families new choices for care during the last stages of life. KershawHealth Hospice offers a support system of doctors, nurses, social workers, home care aides, pharmacists, chaplains and volunteers. It is a program of hope with a “one day at a time” philosophy.

Hospice care is available at home, in a nursing home or other contractual facility with a nurse on call 24 hours a day. Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurances cover hospice care, durable medical equipment and medications related to the patient’s comfort.

Patient and Family

Working closely with the patient's physician and family, Hospice uses an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s care which may include any of the following:

  • Registered nurse on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Skilled nursing care.
  • Home health aide service.
  • Medical social service.
  • Support by specially trained Hospice volunteers.
  • Spiritual support.
  • Occupational, physical, speech and other therapies.

Bereavement Care

One of the greatest losses a person can experience occurs when a loved one dies. KershawHealth Hospice recognizes grieving as a normal response to a loss. Bereavement services are typically provided for up to one year by professional staff and volunteers. Services include one-to-one counseling, support groups and educational literature. Hospice of Kershaw County also sponsors a grief support group that meets on a regular basis.

Hospice Care

Excellence in Hospice is achieved by skilled, caring and understanding professionals who are committed to providing for the unique needs of those they serve in the hospital or at home. The focus of Hospice is to dispel the fear of pain and indignity and restore a sense of hope and control. The Hospice team will help manage pain and will involve patients in treatment decisions while demonstrating ultimate respect for personal values, beliefs and lifestyles.

Hospice Volunteers

Hospice volunteers are specially trained, caring people who bring understanding, support and special skills to help patients and their families. Some of the services provided by volunteers include:

• Companionship for the patient and family.
• Errands for patient or family.
• Transportation to and from doctor’s appointments.
• Activities based on special patient needs and individual volunteer talents.
